/////////The Heart’s Desire:
Aphrodisiacs and the Magic of the Heart in Love///////

Join Emilie Baltz, aphrodisiac researcher extraordinaire and Nina Tandon, the heart’s scientist, in exploring the hidden inner workings of our bodies in love and lust. From how food affects our human urges to how the heart changes as its tightly gripped by romantic love: our bodies reflect our innermost urges, and this evening we will discuss how and why this happens to all of us.

Emilie Baltz is a creative omnivore. Working at the intersection of food, sex and design, she creates work that provokes our relationship to eating and drinking through imagery, products, books and experiences. Her clients include Ebay, The Museum of Sex, Droog Design, The New York Parks Department, The Vitra Design Museum and GOOD magazine. She is presently working on a fine art cookbook based on the relationship between love, food and aphrodisiacs titled “L.O.V.E FOODBOOK”, to be released in the US this year. Emilie serves as faculty in SVA MFA Products of Design and is a visiting lecturer at l’ESAD in Reims, France.

Nina Tandon is a tissue engineer at Columbia University and professor at Cooper Union. Her research involves the use of electrical signalling for directing cell differentiation. She spent one year working on an electronic nose used to “smell” lung cancer, and then completed her PhD studying electrical stimulation for cardiac tissue engineering. She is now continuing her research on electrical stimulation for broader tissue engineering applications, including heart tissue.

The Standard, High Line
848 Washington Street
High Line Room
RSVP on Facebook or to talks@standardhotel.com

New 'do!

New 'do!:
“…[H]er age was “somewhere between 49 and 100,” she said” - I fought for that phrase!

A collection of photos from TED Global (thanks to John Werner!)

A collection of photos from TED Global (thanks to John Werner!)

We think Sunny might be doing some modeling work on the side,...

We think Sunny might be doing some modeling work on the side, look at this!

We will be talking about Gossip, what it means today, why we consistently engage in it, and all other dirty tidbits you might want to discuss.

One of our participants is the incredibly talented Clay Shirky, media thinker and doer. Clay has taken to the internet to write about a variety of subjects, from the future of the medium to the evolution of the relationships we create on(and off)line. He is also the author of “Cognitive Surplus” and “Here Comes Everybody”.

——

What’s behind the rumor that has the city abuzz? Why do you keep telling yourself you’ll stop gossiping, but can’t? In the secret world of word-of-mouth, who can journalists trust and how do they source their stories?

Peeling back the curtain on gossip, we look at one of the oldest traditions known to humankind. Today, with the Internet exploding with information, most of it impossible to control, how is it changing and where is it heading?

With
Clay Shirky (Social Media Theorist, Author)
Nick Denton (Founder, Gawker)
Virginia Heffernan (Yahoo!

Great chart that unpicks the difference between a “well-organized” conversation and one that is actually well designed. This might seem like a little thing, but I’d go so far as to argue that, as human beings are essentially the most critical element in any innovation initiative, this is precisely an area in which we should all invest much more attention and care. It’s likely the topic will get more attention soon, as my colleague, Chris Ertel is working on abook about designing strategic conversations at this very moment—along with Lisa Kay Solomon, who teaches the MBA in Design Strategy course at California College of Arts. For now, take a look at some of their early findings (and other charts of this ilk) in this piece they wrote for the Design Management Review. Well worth the read.

I wrote about Crazy and Proud for The New York Times in February, while Lowell Handler was raising money for the project through Kickstarter.

In 1999, Lowell Handler, who has Tourette’s syndrome, began teaching photography to mentally ill women at a city shelter. He has already reached his $3,300 goal and will use all the money he raises by his deadline — Saturday night — to make an e-book of the photographs taken by these women, accompanied by audio interviews he conducted with them.

“I found that these women in these shelters were taking better photographs than the students I taught in colleges,” Mr. Handler said. The students “knew a little about photography, but they knew nothing about life,” he said, adding, “The women knew nothing about photography, but they knew everything about life.”

The e-book was funded, and is now on sale to general public. The first chapter is free on the Crazy and Proud website.
